Industry Context

The Challenge for Mid-Market Distributors

Security Equipment Supply opened in October 1982 in a 1,000 square foot building in St. Louis owned by a relative of one of the three partners. Two employees, a handful of manufacturers, one branch. The company is still independent and family owned four decades later, shipping from 16 branches, and it has been run since July 2022 by Derek Hagenhoff, son of the co founder Michael Hagenhoff

Family ownership explains both the loyalty and the ceiling. SES widened from alarms and fire equipment into access control, structured cabling, networking and connected home product, and each of those categories now ships something with an IP address that somebody has to configure safely. Dealers ask SES about it, because dealers ask SES about everything. The company responds with training, webinars and manufacturer sessions, which is the right instinct applied with the wrong instrument, since training tells an installer what ought to be done and does not do it for them. Salaried security engineers in 16 branches would cost more than the margin on the product they would support, and an independent does not get to spend that money twice

CWS is how the answer arrives without the hiring. Our engineers work under the SES brand and to one delivery standard, on sites throughout the United States and Canada, and in French where Quebec or Canadian federal customers require it. Scoping, quoting and project tracking sit in Corova, so a branch manager watches the same project status the dealer's customer is watching, and nobody has to chase progress by email. The dealer keeps the account, SES keeps the product revenue, and the engineering shows up wearing the right shirt

Positioned at the Point of Decision

Why This Matters for Security Equipment Supply

Four decades of dealer relationships depreciate the moment a dealer has to go somewhere else for the security work. Better that somewhere else is invisible and carries the SES name on the report. That is service margin stacked on top of product margin, earned on jobs the branch already sourced
