The Challenge for Mid-Market Distributors
TBI was founded in Chicago in 1991 as Telecom Brokerage Inc by Geoffrey Shepstone, who ran it for more than thirty years. The brokerage habit stayed as the catalog widened into cloud, internet, data, mobility, voice and managed services sold through systems integrators, VARs, MSPs and IT consultants. When private equity moved through the technology services distributor market, TBI's leadership said publicly that they would not sell to a private equity firm, and for a stretch they were the last large independent standing. AppDirect bought the company on February 1, 2023
Distribution earns on other people's services. TBI's pitch was counsel rather than quotes, white glove attention to partners who wanted the supplier relationship handled for them, and that pitch has a ceiling. Partners now need security outcomes at the end customer, and no distributor answers that by adding another logo to the catalog, because somebody still has to run the assessment, build the identity model and sit in the customer's change window at two in the morning. Building that bench in house would put TBI in direct competition with the partners it exists to serve, which is the one move a distributor cannot make
CWS sits behind the catalog instead. Partners sell the outcome and we deliver it, under their brand or under TBI's, to one standard, across the United States and Canada, with French speaking delivery where Quebec or Canadian federal customers need it. Corova handles scoping, quoting and project tracking, which gives a distributor something it rarely gets from a services supplier, namely a live view of where every engagement stands without chasing anybody for it

Why This Matters for TBI (Technology Business International)
A distributor's whole position rests on partners trusting the recommendation. That trust does not survive a delivery failure at the end customer, whatever logo was on the engineer's badge. CWS exists so the recommendation and the outcome can be underwritten to the same standard
