Running both sides properly is genuinely hard, and not for technical reasons. Offensive work is project-shaped, sold to a security leader who wants findings. Defensive work is retainer-shaped, sold to the same leader who wants quiet. They have different sales cycles, different margins and different staffing rhythms, and the same person is rarely excellent at both. Most firms claiming both are strong at one and adequate at the other, and the customer works out which within a quarter.
