Industry Context

The Challenge for Mid-Market Resellers

Peter Helander founded Heartland Business Systems in Little Chute, Wisconsin in 1992 and ran it for more than three decades. His retirement came in October 2025, the month GenNx360 Capital Partners acquired the company from its previous private equity owner. Six months later HBS bought Applied Tech Solutions of Madison, a deal the buyer said more than doubled the scale of its managed services business. That was the fifth acquisition in six years, following The NetGuys and Nealabc in 2021, Pratum in 2022 and Midwest Computech in 2023

The company now runs 17 regional offices with more than 675 employees, over 400 of them certified engineers, and each acquisition widens the client base again. Growth at that pace outruns any single way of delivering. Applied Tech arrived with its own service delivery platform, which is precisely why HBS wanted it, and which also means a second method of scoping and staffing work now sits inside the building alongside four earlier ones. Its client base compounds the strain. School districts and other public sector buyers commit in bursts tied to budget years and grant cycles, so demand on the HBS engineering bench arrives lumpy, and permanent hiring is an expensive way to absorb a lumpy curve

CWS is the absorbing layer. Our engineers deliver under the Heartland Business Systems name, held to one standard regardless of which acquired team the client came in through, anywhere in the United States or Canada, with French speaking staff available when Quebec or Canadian federal work calls for them. Corova carries the scoping, the quoting and the project tracking, so a project manager hired last month reads the same record as one who has been there since Little Chute was the only office

Why This Matters for Heartland Business Systems

GenNx360 will want more acquisitions, and each will arrive with its own delivery habits. Hiring permanent engineers to paper over that is the expensive way to buy time and the slowest. Capacity bought by the engagement, wearing the HBS badge, costs nothing between grant cycles
