AHEAD announced its purchase of Kovarus on 22 September 2020, the same day it agreed to buy RoundTower Technologies, and the stated logic for the Kovarus half was geography. Since 2003 the firm had been building an integration practice out of San Ramon in California, with reach into Arizona, Colorado, Oregon and Washington, plus an account base drawn from Silicon Valley technology companies. It had just been named Dell Technologies North America Partner of the Year for 2020. AHEAD itself was backed by Centerbridge Partners and Berkshire Partners

Technology accounts are the hardest kind to hold. They run more platforms than a middle market customer and replace them faster, and they staff engineers who will read an assessment line by line. Kovarus made its name on IT automation and service delivery modernisation rather than on security operations, so when those same customers moved security to the front of the buying conversation, the practice that had to grow quickest was the one furthest from the original portfolio. Nor does an account of that calibre wait politely while a bench gets hired. Absorption into a national organisation changes who is asking. It does not answer the question
