Industry Context

The Challenge for Mid-Market Resellers

Gale Sayers finished his NFL career and started a computer supply company. Crest Computer Supply, founded in Chicago in 1984, later took his name, and in 2018 the company was handed to its employees. The handover came thirty four years after the founding, and it changed the economics of the business more than it changed the logo. Sayers now runs from Vernon Hills, Illinois, with offices in Chicago, Rosemont, Bloomington, Boston, Roswell, Decatur and Clearwater, and it placed No. 195 on CRN's 2025 Solution Provider 500

Employee ownership changes what a hire costs. When the staff own the company, adding a permanent security consultant is not a line on somebody else's budget, it is a claim on the owners' own return, and it has to be justified against demand that arrives in bursts. Sayers sells identity and access management and security consulting into exactly that pattern, and it holds SOC 2 Type 2 and SOC 3 attestations, which means the work is audited and the people doing it are named. Geography sharpens the arithmetic. Four of the eight offices sit in Illinois, so a client in Boston or Clearwater who needs four weeks of an identity architect forces a decision nobody enjoys making

That decision disappears when the capacity is rented instead of owned. CWS staffs engagements under the Sayers name, to a single delivery standard, across the United States and Canada, with French language delivery where Quebec or Canadian federal work requires it. Scope, price and project status live in Corova, which keeps the Sayers project manager in command of the engagement without adding anyone to the payroll

Why This Matters for Sayers

An employee owned firm has the cleanest possible incentive to hold fixed cost down and margin up. Rented delivery capacity fits that incentive better than a permanent hire, because it stops when the project stops. The name on the work stays Sayers either way
