Gateway's departure from the area stranded a workforce with twenty years of computer industry experience. Sterling, founded in 1996 in Torrance, California by Troy and Maggi Jones, moved to the Midwest and hired from it. Brad and Jean Moore took majority ownership in 2013
An inherited talent pool is finite by definition, and Sterling's obligations are not. The company graduated from the Small Business Administration's 8(a) programme in 2008, then crossed the 150 employee threshold for IT value added resellers in 2019 and moved into full and open competition under NAICS 541519. It holds CMMC Level 2, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and ITAR compliance, which means every engineer who touches a controlled environment has to meet the same bar the company was certified against. Positions on SEWP V, CIO-CS and ITES-4H put Sterling in front of all branches of the military, including the Space Force. Configuration and integration centres in Sacramento and Dulles, offices in Norfolk, Round Rock, Scottsdale and Cocoa Beach, and subsidiaries in the United Kingdom and Canada all draw on roughly 260 people
